Urticaria Pigmentosa - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition:

It is a most common form of mastocytosis, which is caused by excessive numbers of inflammatory cells (mast cells) in the skin . Urticaria pigmentosa is characterized by transient itchy pale dermal swellings secondary to the release of histamine and possibly other vasoactive agents from mast cells.

In general urticaria Pigmentosa disappears by puberty. It is considered a self-limiting benign disease. Urticaria pigmentosa is a disease that produces skin lesions and intense itching . If the lesions are rubbed, hives may form on the site.They are located most commonly on the trunk, but are also seen on the extremities, head, and neck.

These are of two types:

  1. Acute urticaria is often caused by an allergy and can last between several hours and six weeks;
  2. Chronic urticaria, is remains for a long time.

causes of urticaria pigmentosa:

Here are the list of some causes :

  • The main cause of urticaria pigmentosa is the excessive numbers of inflammatory cells in the skin
  • Age: Urticaria pigmentosa is most often seen in children, but it can occur in adults as well.
  • Acute headache, may also lead to urticaria pigmentosa.
  • Diarrhea can also be a cause of urticaria pigmentosa.
  • skin lesions: Skin lesion may lead to the condition of urticaria pigmentosa. .
  • Systemic mastocytosis may also lead to the condition of urticaria pigmentosa.

Symptoms of urticaria pigmentosa:

The following are the symptoms of Urticaria Pigmentosa:

  • Welt or hive formation when lesions are rubbed or scratched may occur
  • Emotional Stress may be seen in urticaria pigmentosa patient.
  • Blister formation over lesion gives the indication of urticaria formation.
  • Eye drops containing dextan can be seen in this disease.
  • During urticaria pigmentosa, your heartbeat may rise.
  • The headache may be seen in urticaria patient.
  • Red or brown spots are often seen on the skin, typically around the chest and forehead.
  • Diarrhea, is the one of the early symptom of urticaria pigmentosa.
  • Physical Stimuli such as heat, friction, and excessive exercise are among the common symptoms of urticaria pigmentosa.
  • Histamine causes hives, itching, and flushing.

Treatment of urticaria pigmentosa:

  • There is no satisfactory treatment for urticaria pigmentosa.
  • The patient suffering from urticaria pigmentosa should avoid aspirin, codeine, opiates, procaine, alcohol .These can release histamine which can cause itching, flushing and hives.
  • The use of antihistamines such as Benadryl can help control itching, hives, and flushing.
  • An array of drugs is used to treat the symptoms of mastocytosis, including anticholinergics, to relieve intestinal cramping.
  • Potent steroid creams applied for several months under occlusion can reduce itching and unsightliness, but the patches tend to recur within a few months.
