Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition:

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is an erythematosquamous eruption characterized by eruption of the hair follicles, which become firm, red, surmounted with horny plugs, and often form scaly patches. It has a sudden onset and a varied clinical progression and a varied rate of improvement. They may cover the entire body or just parts of the body such as the elbows and knees, palms and soles.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is a skin disorder that causes constant inflammation and scaling of the skin. It is generally accompanied by elevated erythematous spots (papules) on the skin. The papules are the most important diagnostic feature, being more or less acuminate, reddish brown, about pinhead size, and topped by a central horny plug.

Causes of Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris:


The cause of pityriasis rubra pilaris is not known. It is not an infection and cannot be passed on to others that is this disease is not contagious.

Symptoms of Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris:

The possible symptoms of pityriasis rubra pilaris are :-

  • A number of rashes may be seen on the affected area
  • Affected area may be itchy in its early stages.
  • The thick skin on the palms and soles can split and become painful. Walking may be sore.
  • Shivering may also occur and loses a great deal of heat if the rash is angry.
  • Symptoms may include reddish-orange patches on the skin and severe flaking.
  • Swelling of the legs, feet and other parts of the body may occur in the early stages.

Treatments of Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris:

The effective treatments for pityriasis rubra pilaris are :-

  • Accutane or Soriatane pills are the best treatment .
  • Topical medications such as emollients may be used to get relive from dryness and cracking.
  • Derivative of vitamin A known as Acitretin or isotretinoin can also be used to get rid from pityriasis rubra pilaris.
  • Methotrexate, a strong drug that suppresses the immune system may help pityriasis rubra pilaris.
  • Steroid creams and ointments may also be used to remove the rashes.
