Leucoderma (Vitiligo) - Causes, Symptoms And Home Remedies for the Treatment of Vitiligo

What is Leucoderma (vitiligo)?

Leucoderma is an area of skin which has lost its colour. When leucoderma occurs without any preceding disease it is called vitiligo. Sometimes it follows burns and injuries. Some women develop it after the use of stick-on 'bindis' and after wearing plastic foot wear - this loss of colour is due to some chemicals present in the plastics.

Patches of leucoderma can be of variable sizes and shapes. They can occur just about anywhere on the body. In fair individuals, leucoderma often goes unnoticed, but on dark skinned people it can be very visible and cause severe embarrassment. Leucoderma does not cause any health problems - it is not contagious or dangerous at all. It is only a cosmetic problem.

Causes of Vitiligo (leucoderma)?

Vitiligo has several possible causes including:

  • Physical Trauma
  • Diseases such as Diabetes
  • Pernicious Anaemia
  • Sunburn
  • Physical Illness
  • Thyroid Disease or Addison's Disease.

Symptoms of Leucoderma (Vitiligo)

Vitiligo causes smooth, white skin patches. The problem of leucoderma usually starts with a small white spot and later on it develops into bigger skin patches. These skin patches are usually pale in the beginning and as time passes they become whiter and whiter, this is due to the loss of pigment in them. In some people, these patches can appear all over the body. In some of the rare cases, the whole body may be covered with broad white patches.

Natural Home remedy for treatment of Vitiligo (Leucoderma)

There are a number of misconceptions regarding the availability of treatment for leucoderma. There is actually plenty of hope for vitiligo patients. The results with treatment are good. They are excellent if the treatment is taken early , but the patches of leucoderma which occur in areas of the skin which are naturally hairless, like the palms and soles, take long to improve.

There is no cure for vitiligo, but there are several treatments, including dyes or psoralens (light-sensitive drugs) used in combination with Ultraviolet A light treatment.

Psoralens are the mainstay of treatment. These are nothing but purified form of babchi - the age old remedy. Pigmentation occurs with the help of sunlight. Both oral medicines and ointment form are available. A single small patch can be camouflaged using cosmetics. If the patches are extensive and generalised, then it would be simpler to get rid of the small amount of natural pigment present, so as to get a uniform colour for the whole body.
