Hyperhidrosis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition:

Hyperhidrosis, is a common disorder which produces a lot of unhappiness. It is generally characterized by excessive sweating of the palms with excessive perspiration involving the hands, face, and soles of the feet, as well as the armpits, chest or back. This kind of excessive sweating is a serious medical condition and is called hyperhidrosis.

When sweating is in extreme point, it can be embarrassing, uncomfortable, may induce anxiety, and disabling. It can disrupt all aspects of a person' s life, from career choices and recreational activities to relationships, emotional well-being, and self-image.

Causes of Hyperhydrosis:

The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is not known till now.

Some of the Possible Causes of Hyperhydrosis may be:-

  • There are numerous of sweat glands distributed all over our body. Any abnormality in these glands, will directly affect the functions of it. So, it is one of the main cause of hyperhydrosis.
  • Hyperhidrosis may produce from excess sweating due to malfunction of the thyroid or pituitary gland, infection, diabetes mellitus, tumors, gout , and menopause. Hyperhidrosis affects both males and females equally.
  • Heridity: To some extent, family history of hyperhydrosis is responsible for it.
  • Parkinson's disease, is also the main cause of hyperhydrosis.
  • Cardiovascular Disorders: Persons suffering from heart disease are usually more prone to get affected by hyperhydrosis.
  • Respiratory Failure: Respiratory failure, may directly affect the functions of sweat glands and thus, inturn leads to hyperhydrosis.
  • Hyperhydrosis, may be due to damage in the spinal nerves.
  • Brain tumour, may also lead to the condition of hyperhydrosis.
  • An increase in air temperature, exercise, fever, anxiety, or spicy food may set off attacks of sweating. The sweating usually reduces at night time and disappears during sleep.

Sympyoms of Hyperhidrosis:

Some Important Symptoms for Hyperhidrosis are as:-

  • Your hands may sweat while meeting someone for the first time, through nervousness or emotional distress.
  • Even rubbing on a small amount of lotion can trigger palmar hyperhidrosis.
  • Axillary Hyperhidrosis , excessive sweating in the armpits, can cause embarrassing wet marks on shirts. People with this condition usually avoid many colors and fabrics which they think could show the sweat marks.
  • Patients with palmar hyperhidrosis have wet, moist hands that sometimes interfere with grasping objects.
  • Most patients with palmar hyperhidrosis also consider it a difficult social problem since every time they shake hands, they leave the other person's palm very moist, a sensation most people find unpleasant.
  • Plantar hyperhidrosis is the excessive sweating of the feet and leads to moist socks and shoes as well as increased foot odor.
  • Symptoms consist of excessive sweating at the armpits, hands, groin and feet.
  • Symptoms are so severe that the hands, as well as the axillae, may be dripping sweat, leading to difficulties encountered in business and social conditions.

Treatments of hyperhydrosis:

Some of the Effective Treatments for Hyperhydrosis are as:-

  • Ointments or Antiperspirants - This is the initial treatment for moderate or light hyperhidrosis. A product such as Drysol is recommended. The medication is less effective on the thick skin of the palms and soles.
  • Injection - Another treatment is the injection of BOTOX into the area of excessive sweating. When a small amount of botox is injected into the armpits or palms, it stops those areas from getting sweaty.
  • Oral Anticholinergic Medication - Oral anticholinergic medication, is very effective for the fast recovery from hyperhydrosis.
  • Iontopheresis - A very simplest and cheap remedy for stopping sweating from palms or soles of the feet is iontophoresis. This treatment consists of electrical stimulation of the affected areas. Treatment is repeated until sweating is under control. Drionic is the product recommended.
