Discoloration of Elbows and Knees - Causes and some Treatment options for that

Skin in the elbows and knees can be much darker than the surrounding skin. Melanin is responsible for giving color to the skin. Melanin, is a skin coloring pigment, produced from melanocytes.

A white skin contains no melanin. The skin of knees and elbows are darker and thus having large number of melanin. There are several conditions in which melanocytes are either abnormal or abnormally distributed. Most skin conditions that cause discoloration are harmless.

A dark area indicates more numerous or more active melanocytes. A discoloration of elbows and knees are mainly due to benign hyperpigmentation.
