Boils, Carbuncles and Pustules

Boils, Carbuncles and pustules, the most infective skin condition, are the result of deep bacterial infection of hair follicles. It is usually caused by a bacterium (germ) called Staphylococcus aureus. They occur in areas covered with coarse hair which are subjected to repeated mild friction such as the neck, buttocks, knees and elbows. A boil starts a small, red, painful nodule, increasing in size for a few days, and then becoming soft at its top where the skin gives way to discharge pus.

Symptoms for boils may include:

  • Pus in the center of the boil.
  • Whitish, bloody discharge from the boil.

Symptoms for carbuncles (clusters of boils) may include:

  • Pus in the center of the boils.
  • Whitish, bloody discharge from the boils.
  • Fever.
  • Fatigue.

Healing and Treatment of Boils and Carbuncles to Get Rid of them

A carbuncle tends to increase in size for a few days up to 3-10 centimetres across, sometimes more. After 5-7 days, various pus-filled lumps appear on the surface and pus leaks onto the skin. It then may 'break down' and form an ulcer on the skin surface before the infection gradually subsides.

Healing of boils and carbuncles occurs, leaving a tiny scar. A boil usually takes its own course of a week or so in healing and no treatment may be required. But when there are multiple boils, or when a boil becomes very large, or when it is on the central portion of the face then regular medicines are required (after consulting from a physician). If not treated timely then infection can spread even to the brain. If you have been getting crops of boils repeatedly, it is worthwhile to get your blood sugar tested your boils may well be a sign of diabetes.

If the boil is on the nose or the upper lip, the inside of the nose might get inflamed. Boils are very painful and may sometimes be accompanied by fever.

You must see your doctor if the boil doesn't come to a head within a couple of days (because it may need lancing), or if it is in a particularly tricky spot, such as on the buttocks, or if you get a crop of boils.

Your doctor may also prescribe some antibiotics in addition to draining the pus to help quickly control the infection.

Are Boils Contagious?

Yes, boils and carbuncles are contagious. The pus that drains when a boil opens can contaminate nearby skin, causing new boils to occur, or can enter the bloodstream and may cause other body parts also to infect. A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that occurs when the infection spreads and other boils are formed. The formation of a carbuncle may be an indication of immune depression.

Natural Home Remedies for the Treatment of Boils, Carbuncles and Pustules

People suffering from boils ,pustules and carbuncles should follow the following remedies:

The simplest remedy for treating boils, pustules and carbuncles is to apply warm compresses - a piece of clean cloth dipped in warm water is sufficient. The boil is then likely to burst soon and the pain rapidly decreases.

Some other common home remedies for boils are:

  • Neem has been a proven remedy for boils from early times. Grind neem tree bark in water and apply it as a paste.
  • Curing Boils from Cator tree is another effective one. Grind the bark of the castor tree and the root of biskhapra (Triathema monogyna) together and apply as a paste.
  • Keep your bowels clear and avoid sour or fatty foods.
  • Mash 2-3 fresh garlic cloves into a paste and apply locally on the boil.
  • Eating melons helps the bowels and also cleanses the blood.
  • Turmeric Paste is also a proven remedy. Use equal parts of fresh ginger and turmeric ground together. Apply when quite warm on a boil.
  • Take a leaf of the peepal tree, smear it with ghee and apply as a lukewarm bandage on the boil. It will burst in its preliminary stage and the growth will subside.
