How to Apply Eye Liner? - Use of Eye Liners, Eye Pencils, Kohl Pencils

Depth and intensity, drama and expression come to the eyes through the clever use of definers: eyeliners, pencils and kohls. Available in rich, darkly shaded colours, these emphasize the eyes, create new shapes and give the eyes a mysterious and exotic allure. Here again, practice will make you perfect.

Applying Eye Liner

Step 1: Draw a thin line, try to draw as close to the base of your eyelids as possible. Start from the inside corner of your eye and work your way out. If you are not expert in drawing one long line all at once, do it in short strokes.

Step 2: When you have finished lining, lightly smudge (blend) the line you just drew. It will make the line smooth so that it doesn't look like a distinct line.

Step 3: Experiment with lining the bottom of your eyes the same way for a more dramatic look. When lining your bottom lids, go in the opposite direction: start from the outside corner and work your way in.

Using the Liquid Eye Liner

Test, on the back of your hand, the amount of pressure you should apply. Unless you are a real artist, it is best to steady your elbow on a flat surface. Work from the inside of the eye to the outside corner and keep the line light and even. If you stop at the corner of the eyes, the effect will be round and wide-eyed; if you continue the line and sweep it up and out, you would get a more exotic look. Finally smudge the edges with a cotton bud to soften them.

Use of Eye Pencils and Kohl Pencils

Pencils can be used in the same way to define or extend the shape of the eyes, but they give a softer, more natural line. Keep them sharpened and ready for use, as blunted or broken points can spoil the whole effect.
