Moisturization - Different Kinds of Moisturizers - Homemade Moisturizer

Our skin loses water constantly through exposure to he air and the elements. Age, also play an important role in this water loss. The older your skin is, less able it is to hold in the moisture effectively. So, moisturization is very essential to the skin to keep it healthy, soft, supple, smooth and firm. There are molecules on the skin surfaces, that form a matrix to retain moisture. These mixtures of molecules are known as skin's natural moisturization factor. These molecules include lactic acid, urea, etc. Moisturizers, may also contain anti-oxidant.

There are three qualities to look for in a moisturizer. These includes:-

  • whether it helps control the dryness.

  • whether it occludes the pores , which causes acne the milia ,

  • whether it irritates the skin.

Kinds of Moisturizers:

There are many types of moisturizers. There are three basic categories of moisturizers-those meant for dry, normal and oily skins.

Moisturizers for dry skin:

It is characterised by its tight, rough feel and its dull appearance. Dry skin is apparent in its upper-most layer, the epidermis. Moisturizers are a very important part of dermatology, which keeping the skin moist is one of the key factors in healthy skin.

Some instructions for moisturization of dry skin includes:-

  • when you take your bath or shower, try to use lukewarm water. Hot water dries out the skin.
  • Avoid using harsh soaps that dry the skin. The soaps that are recommended by dermatologists includes: Dove, Olay and Basis. Even better than soap are skin cleansers such as Cetaphil Lotion, Oilatum-AD and Aquanil.
  • Avoid vigorous use of a washcloth in cleansing. When toweling dry, do not rub the skin. Blot or pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the skin.

Moisturizers for normal skin:

These formulations contain tiny droplets of oil dispersed in water with the help of an emulsifying agent. These moisturizers are drier and less greasy on yuur skin than those meant for dry skin.

Moisturizers for oily skin:

Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull colored. Often a chronically oily skin has coarse pores and pimples and other embarrassing blemishes. It is prone to blackheads .

Some tips for careing of oily skin:

  • Cleanse your face two or three times daily with good old soap and water.
  • Take shower or bathe in tepid rather than steaming-hot water. Hot water can strip your skin of needed moisture, while cold water can shock your skin.
  • The oil glands are very sensitive'stimuli such as hormones, heat and fatty food can trigger them.

Emollients used in moisturizer lotions are usually oils . Natural or essential oils may also be used in skin moisturizers. Excellent natural emollient oils for moisturizers are derived from avocado, almond, olive, cocoa and shea butter.

Many moisturizers contain liposomes. Liposomes are little globules containing the ingredients, which includes: vitamins, drugs, or other active ingredients in the moisturizers internally for delivery to the dermis.
