How do face masks help the skin?

Basically all face masks have some sort of a cleansing action. Various ingredients are used in the face masks, depending on the skin type (Know your skin type) and to some extent on the availability of materials. Clays form an important constituent of many face masks as they are excellent absorbing agents. Gums and polymers are added to lend sticking properties to the clays. They help to remove dirt, sebum, and dead skin so that the skin looks clean, soft and youthful.

coming out and also prevents fresh oxygen from entering the body. This results in the skin losing its original glow. The face becomes unattractive. After that it is massaged
and steamed and then the face-pack is applied.


Face mask is only applied only on a clean skin. Use cleansing cream or cleansing-milk to clean the face. If your skin is oily, wash it with soap and tepid water. If the skin is dry, wipe cream with cotton swabs.


Next comes steaming. Steaming helps in opening of the pores, thus the skin gets the full benefit of face mask. Take a broad pot and boil water in it. Cover your face with a big towel and put it on the mouth of the vessel. You can put peppermint, rose-petals, mint-petals or petals of marigold in the water, if you so desire. Dry your face by patting it gently.

If you are using the market product, then you must read all the instructions on the label very carefully before use. Apply the paste on your face and neck leaving the portion'
below your eyes. Place cotton wool swabs dipped in rose water on your eyes and lie down calmly. As long as the paste is on your face do not smile or talk. If possible, keep your feet at a higher level.

Why do we need a face mask?

A face mask or pack clenses, revitalises, stimulates and exfoliates the skin. It also functions as a deep pore clenser. A good face mask helps to free clogged pores, loosens the blackheads, removes dirt and recharches the cells. There are several types of face masks available in the market. Some need to be washed away while some need to be peeled off.

How long should one keep the Face Mask?

That varies from individual to individual depending upon the nature of the skin as also on the quality of face-pack. Normally, the duration should be for about ten to twenty minutes. The important factor is that the pack should get dried. Then wash the face with luke-warm water and afterwards apply a thin layer of cold-cream or a moisturizer.

Fuller's earth is a special kind of clay often used in face masks. It contains aluminium silicate. As it dries on the skin, it absorbs the superficial dead cells and blots up any excessive oil on the skin. It is therefore excellent for an
oily skin but should not be used on a dry skin.

Kaolin is also a fine clay which has long been used for tummy upsets because it absorbs toxins from the system. When used on the skin it removes grime, oils and dead cells. Kaolin is again best suited for oily skins and best avoided on dry skins.

Another ingredient of some of the face masks is the peeling or the exfoliating agent - these remove the top layer of dead cells from the skin, leaving behind fresh youthful skin. They are usually well tolerated and really brighten up a dull complexion. Oatmeal and bran are the commonly used peelers.

Oatmeal is obtained from oats. It is rich in vitamin B and vitamin E. For the last named content, it has been attributed with anti-aging qualities. However, even if vitamin E does have any magical anti-aging properties, it is quite unlikely that the contact for, a short time, as during the application of the face pack, would benefit the skin. The rather youthful appearance of the skin after use of oatmeal containing masks is due to the removal of the superficial dead skin and the appearance of the younger
skin on the surface. This effect is similar to the effect of epidermabrasion, a technique which we have already discussed.

Also added to many masks are natural ingredients - cucumbers, curds, lemon juice and Brewer's yeast There are claims of several advantages of these additives; the one effect that has been scientifically established is the restoration of the acid/alkali balance of the skin by these agents as all of them have an acidic pH.
