Colouring of Hair - Different Types of Hair Colors

Colouring one's hair is becoming more and more popular. Choosing the right product avoid problems like dryness and hair fall, which are often associated with colouring.

Hair is mainly keratin, the same protein found in skin and fingernails. The natural color of hair depends on the ratio and quantities of two other proteins, eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin is responsible for brown to black hair shades while phaeomelanin is responsible for golden blond, ginger, and red colors. The absence of either type of melanin produces white/gray hair.

A good hair color can add shine, drama and fun to your hair style. Remember, if your hair is in a damaged condition before hair coloring, it may very well become worse afterward. Make sure you have your hair condition in the best possible shape before adding hair coloring.

Types of Haircolor:

There are many types of hair colours. Some of these are as:-

  • Temporary Haircolor:- The temporary hair color is deposited on the outside of the hair shaft and remains last up to 1-2 shampoos.
  • Semi-Temporary Haircolor:- These haircolor, usually contain no ammonia and it lasts up to 4-6 shampoos.
  • Demi Permanent Haircolor:- This type of haircolor, usually contains little or no ammonia and utilize a low peroxide developer. It will remains up to 6 weeks and gradually faded to the normal colour of the hairs.
  • Semi-Permanent Haircolor:- This type of hair color, usually contains some ammonia and uses a developer of 10-20 vol.

All these hair color products, except for temporary color, require a patch test before application to determine if the client is allergic to the product.

The permanent haircolor products and lighteners contain both a developer, or oxidizing agent, and an alkalizing ingredient as part of their ammonia or an ammonia substitute.

Effects of aging on hair color

A change in hair color typically occurs naturally as people age. Sometimes people are born with gray hair because it is passed down genetically. The change in hair color is caused by the gradual decrease of pigmentation that occurs when melanin ceases to be produced in the hair root, and new hairs grow in without pigment.
